Moved by God to Become an Immovable Mom

This one is for you mamas out there.

There’s just something about motherhood that moves every emotion within you.

From the moment you meet them, whether by birth or adoption, to the moment you release them, the momentum of motherhood is constantly moving you forward — on to the next age, into the next phase, navigating the latest craze, and learning the newest ways — and it all can be a bit exhausting!

Which is why I want to encourage you with this verse found in Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth. It was a charge to them then, and I believe it is a charge to us now.

In my favorite three translations (with some of my favorite words italicized) it says…

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (1 Corinthians 15:58, NLT)

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV)

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58, NIV)

Be Strong. Steadfast. Stand Firm.

We find God’s charge to His people to “be strong” throughout scripture. In fact, He repeats it several times in Deuteronomy 31 and in Joshua 1 as the baton is being passed from Moses to Joshua to lead His people courageously. That kind of strength requires steadfastness and consistency, two qualities that produce rock solid results because they both require a firm foundation on which to stand.

As moms, we’re leading our people (which are really His people created by Him, and lent to us to raise and love). So whether you are raising littles, launching bigs, or wrestling, waiting, and praying somewhere in the middle, hold on to hope!

Be strong, stay steadfast, and stand firm on the Word of God. It will be your strength, consistency, and firm foundation.

Immovable.

Like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a grocery store or a kid in a carseat with an arched back are quite immovable (and sometimes, immutable), we as moms are to be immovable, too.

The NIV says, “Let nothing move you.” Our tendency in the world we leave in is to be overly influenced by culture because we are under nourished by scripture. It is easy to just go with the flow and follow where others go, and before we know it, the current current of culture takes us to places we never thought we’d allow ourselves to go.

We naturally want to bend to societal whims lest we break under the pressure of the chokehold they’ve got us in. The only way to resist being moved by culture is to be moved by God. His power supernaturally helps us stay immovable. He doesn’t change. He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever, and if we are following Him, and leading our kids where He’s leading us, we will not be swayed by what others say. We will be led by the voice of Truth, and He tells us to be immovable.

Always working fully and enthusiastically for the Lord.

Always means in all ways. Fully means completely. Enthusiastically means joyfully. Work in this world does not always carry a positive connotation, but work done for the Lord goes beyond ourselves and impacts generations to come. Little eyes are watching. Little ears are hearing. And little hands are doing what you do. So always work fully and enthusiastically for the Lord. Because…

You know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

And you can be fully convinced of that. All God’s promises are true, and this is a promise to you! Nothing means no thing that you do will be rendered useless if you are working for the Lord. That is your reward. The knowledge that He is with you. He makes you strong, steadfast, firm, and immovable, and He will fuel the passion for the work you do in motherhood and beyond.

So, sweet mama, keep working for Him! Keep raising those kids. Keep pointing them to Him. Your motherhood is sacred, holy work, and He is at the center of it all!

Commit your work in motherhood to Him today. Call on His power alone to move you to immovability in Him. Trust Him for your strength and steadfastness and you stand firm in your faith. Not sure where to start? Start by simply joining me in this prayer…

Father, thank you for being the perfect parent, and for providing me an example to live out in my own home with my own children. Father, that you for the gifting me with the honor of motherhood. I long to steward it well and please you in every season it brings. God, my heart’s desire is to honor you by being strong and staying steadfast as I stand firm on your Word. Father, help me be immovable and work enthusiastically for you and your Kingdom. I pray my work start in my own heart, overflow in my own home, and that I’d be willing to go wherever you call me, knowing the work I do for you is never in vain. Give me strength to live out your love before a watching world, and I pray that many lives would be drawn to you in the process. I am grateful to be your daughter. It is my highest call and impacts the way I mother my own children. Help me do it well. All for their good and for your glory! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
