There’s Beauty in the Broken when We Stay to be Remade

I’ve never actually wielded a potter’s wheel, but I have fashioned my fair share of playdoh creations, and I know full well what it is like to conceptualize a work of art, and then have to go through several iterations before realizing said masterpiece.

Let me start by saying unlike you and me, God does not make mistakes. Even in the mess ups we make, He can craft that new thing and finish that complete work in His perfect timing delivering a masterpiece every time, right on time, and often in the nick of time!

“And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭18‬:‭4‬, ‭ESV‬‬)

“But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭18‬:‭4‬, NLT‬‬)

“But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭18‬:‭4‬, ‭NIV‬‬)

We are all broken, imperfect, and marred vessels in the beautiful, perfect, and masterful Potter’s hands.

This analogy was given to the prophet Jeremiah by the Lord Himself when He instructed Jeremiah to go to the potter’s house, observe the process, and receive a message from the Lord for Israel, His people.

I encourage you to read the rest of Jeremiah 18 to hear the message God had for His people then, and ask Him, in prayer, how it applies to you and me today.

God has been, is currently, and always will be the Master Potter, molding and shaping us, His children, to be more like Him.

He cannot, does not, and will not ever make a mistake, but boy we sure do, all the time.

The very best part about our mess ups is that God uses them to make something even more beautiful than we thought possible. The beauty of His grace is best seen against the backdrop of our brokenness.

Yes, there’s beauty in the broken, so simply stay in the Potter’s hands and be remade again and again. You’re a masterpiece worth the wait, and take heart, because God is never late.

Father, have your way in my heart today. I know I make mistakes every day, but I am grateful for your grace, love, and forgiveness, that washes over me and makes me more moldable so you can make me into the masterpiece you want me to be. I trust what you were doing even in the midst of the hard and painful parts of the process. Teach me from your Word today, and help me trust and obey. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

There’s beauty in brokenness

When we stay to be remade

The One that holds us

Will also mold us

With beauty that will not fade

He uses the pieces of our brokenness

To make something completely new

Because what once was

Was just a facade

That kept His light from shining through

And apart from His light

We will never truly see

The gift of grace

That’s ours to embrace

Giving purpose to our identity

God wants to use our brokenness

In His grand masterpiece

A mosaic of His heart

A beautiful work of art

Reflecting hope, joy, and peace

The cracks that once held pain

Will one day hold the glue

He’ll use to shape us

And even remake us

Now that His Light can fill the cracks, too

There will always be lessons to learn

And with each lesson, feelings to feel

But God can use it all

And He will fuse it all

Into a heart that’s ready to heal

Being broken in His hands

Is the safest place we’ll ever be

Giving us time to mend

And Him time to blend

Forgiveness and fragility

Brokenness leads to openness

And openness lets light in

Light to see His beauty

And to know our identity

To forever behold and be held by Him
