On Matters that Matter
/What matters most?
My top three, in this order specifically:
My God. My family. My community.
Things down the line from those have to come behind what matters most.
It all matters, but it can’t all matter most.
So, let’s keep the main thing the main thing, and the main thing will take care of the other things.
I have a tendency to overthink things. So much so, I can sometimes overthink my overthinking!
I let other people’s opinions plague me, popular opinion persuade me, and even my own opinions evade me.
And all these opinions create a lot of noise and distraction, sometimes causing me to miss His voice and direction.
What He wants > what I want.
What He commands > what others demand.
When we lose sight of what matters most, we get tripped up by the lesser things because we’re not being equipped by the main thing.
Let’s keep our eyes FIXED on the main thing. He’s the only thing that can FIX the lesser things.
And guess what? Overthinking anything fixes nothing!
A song that keeps playing over in my mind, echoing what the Holy Spirit has been speaking to my heart is “Things that Matter” by Josiah Queen. The chorus and bridge seem to sum up this post…
🎶 ”Help me see the world through Your eyes
'Til what breaks Your heart is breaking mine
Slow me down, this world is moving faster
But I don't wanna miss the things that matter
I got a thousand shouting voices in my head
'Cause I've heard a million more on the Internet
Father, how can I discern Your voice from all of these distractions?
When did I start missing the things that matter?” 🎶
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to miss the things that matter because I’m too focused on the things that don’t.
So, let’s focus on what matters most — God, family, community, in that order, keep them close. I promise you’ll see the difference it makes, and find clarity in any steps you need to take to keep the main thing the main thing.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” ~ Hebrews 12:1-3
