Stop the scroll if it’s not feeding your soul.
/If scrolling has you stressed or depressed, I’d love to offer you two simple words, followed by two more that lead to far more...
Just stop. Then start.
Stop scrolling. Start seeking.
Stop aimlessly and mindlessly consuming content that leaves you discontent, and start reading and feeding on the very Word of God. It never runs dry and will always satisfy.
I know there are accounts you follow and influencers you like because they encourage and equip you with Biblical truths, and that, my friend, is great. It’s ok that you like and follow them, as long as their content is pointing you to Him. Two great questions to ask yourself when evaluating your social media feed:
1) Does the content I am consuming in my social media feed put a desire in me to read and study God’s Word more?
2) Do I love Jesus more than I like posts about Him? Does He have my whole heart or just a half hearted thumbs up?
Our social media feeds are curated for fast consumption because our attention spans are short and our minds are being programmed to think that less is more, so we snack on sound bites, instead of feasting on the Bread of Life.
We fill up on snacks, leaving us with no appetite for the main course.
We must stop the scroll if our feeds are not truly feeding our souls. Our thumbs may be strengthened, but our spirits are weakened.
When God’s Word is read, we are not only fed, we’re nourished instead, and our spirit is strengthened while the enemy of our souls is weakened.
So let's stop merely consuming carefully curated content, and let's start connecting with the heart of the Father until our souls are content. It is only when we are filled up in Him that we can spill out on others the encouragement they need to find true contentment in Him.
If we connect with God first, we can connect with others best.
Always snacking on social media sound bites will always leave us craving more of Christ — the only source that truly satisfies…
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35, ESV)
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38, ESV)
More of Him. Less of me.
More time in His Word. Less time on my phone.
More study. Less scrolling.
More feasting. Less snacking.
Stop the scroll if it’s not feeding your soul.
Stop Scrolling & Start Seeking
(a spoken word)
Hey you, yes you,
Are you sick of scrolling?
Yeah, I am, too.
And the irony
Is not lost on me
That I’m am indeed
By placing this in your feed
Perpetuating said scroll
So even as I type these words
That feel rather futile
And even a little absurd
I want to encourage you with this post
But truth be told
I probably need it the most
I think we all understand all too well
Exactly what it’s like
To be under the “doom scroll” spell
And yet that’s what we do
Again and again
Like an itch we can’t scratch
Like a game we can’t win
We sink deeper as we scroll
And periodically come up for air
Trying to regain some control
From the gloom and despair
But like a drug
we just can’t stop
We scroll some more
Knowing we ought not
The only remedy I can see
To stop this insanity
Is to do just that
And simply stop the scroll
Because what’s in our feeds
Is not feeding our souls
Yes, it’s that simple
Let’s close this app
And open God’s Word
Read the best news
That we’ve ever heard
And the despair we feel
Will quickly be replaced
By fullness of joy
And unending grace
Knowing we are deeply loved
And fully known
Always seen
Never alone
We don’t need a social media feed
Full of conflicting information
We need the very Word of God
For a radical transformation
So what do you say?
Shall we do this together?
Less scroll and more control
Maybe even feel a little better?
You know, God’s Word
Can actually do that for us
Heal what’s broken
Soften what’s tough
It’s so worth a try
To stop the scroll
I mean, He was willing to die
To save our souls
Let’s spend more time
Seeking Christ alone
Than scrolling for hours
On an app on our phones
