Search the Scriptures, but Seek the Savior

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:1-5, ESV).

I love that the Gospel of John starts with these five verses. They have such profound meaning in the life of a believer. They are not only an introduction to this Gospel account, they are the heartbeat of John, the Beloved Disciple, the one who wrote them. And more importantly, they are the heartbeat of the Trinity…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Yes, these verses are the pulse that permeated all the Gospel accounts (and really the entire Word of God, Genesis to Revelation) through the men who penned them, the God who inspired them, the Son whose life, death, and resurrection gives life and breath to them, and the Holy Spirit who makes sense of them by merging the power and purpose of them.

The Good News of the Gospel is the highlight of the very Word of God — literally highlighting the Light of the World, Jesus, the Word made flesh, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Without “the beginning,” there would be no end, and in reality, for the believer, the end is truly just the beginning, in light of Eternity.

The Word of God has been with God since the beginning of time, which in light of eternity, is hard to define.“In the beginning the Word already existed” (John 1:1a, NLT). It has been with us since the beginning of our existence, and It was “made flesh” when Jesus Christ was sent by God to physically dwell among us.

The Triune God, who is and was and always will be, spoke and wrote His Word for you and me. However, the words on a page, doctrinal dos and don’ts, and ancient traditions that have shaped the religion, while they may have their place, can never take the place of Jesus Himself.

We are to search the scriptures, yes, but we are to seek the Savior more.

He is the reason the Word is alive and active. Apart from a relationship with Jesus, Christianity is just a religion. If you don’t believe the Gospel and receive Jesus Christ as the only Way, Truth, and Life, you fail to do what the scripture teaches.

Many today pick and choose what they want to believe. They only take from the Word what makes them feel good or adds to their worth, but in order to live out what God’s Word in all about, we must believe it all — the whole council of scripture.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5: 39-40, ESV)

Jesus not only testified on His own behalf, others added validity to His claims. John the Baptist prepared the way, along with the Father Himself, and so many others. Prophets, priests, and kings told of Jesus who would be the ultimate prophet (John 4:19), the greatest high priest (Hebrews 4:15), and the King of kings (Revelation 19:16).

The Word of God is alive and active. The Word of God is tried and true. Prophecies and promises point us time and time again to Jesus.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, NIV).

“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13, ESV).

Search the scripture, yes, but seek the Savior more. You’ll find Him, and He will not lead you astray.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5: 39-40, ESV)

I’d love for you to join me in this prayer…

Father, I am so grateful for your Word. It's a tangible way in which I can seek your face. I love coming to you in prayer after reading your Word. Thank you for making yourself known by revealing your character throughout Scripture. Thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to save us. You took such attention to detail when laying out your plan of salvation from Genesis to Revelation. Your great love is weaved throughout your Word, and I am so grateful your children can experience the resurrecting power of that love through the work of the cross. It still amazes me. Thank you for saving me and adopting me into your family. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
