From Hosannas to Hallelujahs: The In Between can Lead to a Greater Thing

From Hosannas on Palm Sunday to Hallelujahs on Resurrection Day, Holy Week is a heavy week.

Can you feel the heaviness? The weight of sin weighing more and more heavily on this world we live in?

But take heart, heaviness leads to holiness, and the in between can lead to a greater thing.

Those who cried of “Hosanna,” which literally means “save us,” on Palm Sunday, shouted “Crucify Him” days later. It’s a heaviness too hard to explain, and yet it leads to a holiness that will forever remain. He sealed the deal with an empty tomb at the end of a heavy, Holy Week.

The weight of the wait during Holy Week leads to the weight of Glory when our joy will be made complete. Jesus waited through the last week of His earthly life with the weight of His Father’s plan so heavy on His heart because it was all in His hands.

Yes, this week is heavy, but it is also holy.

It’s a heavy week marked by suffering, and yet it’s a holy week that made a way for the salvation Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection would bring.

It’s a week for being still and silent as we simply sit in the between, knowing the in between will lead to a greater thing.

Between the palm branches that honored Him and the whip lashes that flogged Him…

Between the triumphal entry parade and the betrayal deal Judas made…

Between the intimate last supper and the intense prayers and suffering…

Between Gethsemane and Golgotha…

Between the crown of thorns and the old rugged cross…

Beauty would arise
even as those hosanna cries
became cries to crucify
because eventually Jesus would cry
“Tetelestai”

Yes, a whole lot happened during Holy Week, but even in the instability of the in between, Jesus stayed the course, trusting God for the greater thing.

He was a man on a mission, to carry out His Father’s vision — a plan for eternity that would impact humanity.

He stayed the course.

When He wanted the cup to pass, He stayed the course…

When sweat drops of blood commingled with His tears, He stayed the course…

When a dear friend betrayed Him and another denied Him, He stayed the course…

These things had to happen in between the cheers at His triumphal entry and the jeers at His crucifixion.

And this in between was on display for all to see.

Even more had to happen in between “It is finished” and “He is risen.”

And this in between was behind the scenes, sitting in the silence of Saturday.

But take heart, the in between can lead to a greater thing.

If God has called you to it, He will see you through it.

He’s working in the in between. He’s working behind the scenes. He’s orchestrating the greater thing.

Don’t give up in the instability or the silence of the in between. Wait for the greater thing. Trust God to see you through as you stay the course.
